Abstract

Object replacement in video editing aims to remove or substitute visible entities while preserving the surrounding scene, motion, and temporal coherence. Consumer video editors increasingly expose users to tools for masking, tracking, and basic visual effects, yet object replacement remains constrained to narrow classes of objects, limited motion, or heavily supervised workflows. A general-purpose capability requires that the system handle arbitrary objects, diverse appearance, complex motion, and challenging occlusions, while remaining interactive on commodity hardware and accessible to non-expert users. This paper studies a formulation of general-purpose object replacement suitable for integration into consumer video editors and analyzes the representational, algorithmic, and system-level requirements imposed by this setting. The approach is based on layered spatiotemporal decompositions of video, learned generative models for object appearance conditioned on context, and optimization procedures that enforce temporal and geometric consistency while allowing efficient control from simple user inputs. The paper discusses how video can be factored into background, target object, and residual components; how temporal correspondence and depth ordering can be estimated robustly; and how generative editing operators can be constrained to satisfy physical and perceptual plausibility. A set of numerical considerations related to optimization, discretization, and resource constraints is described, together with implications for user interface design and failure handling. The discussion highlights trade-offs between generality, control, and efficiency, and suggests directions for extending object replacement beyond single foreground entities to richer scene-level manipulations in mainstream editing software.
